Overview

The Staff Software Engineer enhances and maintains software products by translating backlog items into technical designs that meet business needs, while determining the technical feasibility of features. Staff Software Engineers provide strategic solutions for issues, review technical design specifications, and ensure quality in development practices. Additionally, the Staff Software Engineer guides other engineers in configuration tasks to maintain platform stability and usability. By collaborating closely with Business Systems Analysts, Test/QA Engineers, and Product Managers, the Staff Software Engineer is instrumental in driving the achievement of key business objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Determine technical feasibility criteria and identify the next steps and actions for software and features.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex software issues by analyzing root causes and assessing their impact on system performance.
  • Offer strategic solutions, analysis, and advice regarding identified issues for future development.
  • Integrate solutions with other applications and platforms.
  • Mentor and guide junior developers in React and React Native best practices and the principles of micro-frontend architectures, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning.
  • Maintain the stability and usability of the platform across all environments.
  • Translate and/or review backlog items into physical designs and logical units, ensuring designs meet business requests.
  • Design, develop, and rigorously test assigned software components, following established development methodologies.
  • Participate in the design and development of the test automation framework and any required in-house tools.
  • Implement automated testing and integrate best practices within CI/CD pipelines to enhance software quality and delivery speed.
  • Conduct thorough code reviews to ensure quality assurance, incorporating feedback into development artifacts and practices.
  • Use DevOps and Agile processes to deliver desired functionality quickly and effectively while iterating to continue development.
  • Assist with and review technical design specifications.

Minimum Qualifications / Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in related field (e.g., Computer Science, Information Systems, etc.) or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in React based web and mobile application development, with at least 3 years focused on React Native.
  • Deep understanding of React Native framework and its core principles, including functional components, hooks, and context API for state management.
  • Experience using engineering methodologies; related certification or professional engineer designation desirable.
  • Experience in building APIs using GraphQL for both internal and external products.
  • Experience in DevOps and Agile technology environments.
  • Experience with multiple programming languages, with a strong focus on developing modern full stack web applications using frameworks like React, and applying best practices in UI/UX design, performance, and scalability.
  • Experience with development platforms (e.g., AWS, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g. MongoDB, DynamoDB, etc.).
  • Experience directing team workflows (preferred).
  • Native-level proficiency/fluent in English.

Preferred Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of software design principles, application servers, middleware, and related tools and concepts.
  • Expert-level understanding of React.js, its core principles, lifecycle, state management, hooks, and context API.
  • Deep experience in JavaScript/TypeScript (ES6+), including understanding of asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, and AJAX.
  • Experience in developing cross-platform mobile applications for both iOS and Android using React Native.
  • Proficiency in developing native modules for either iOS or Android to extend the functionality of React Native applications.
  • Familiarity with native build tools, like XCode, Gradle (Android Studio), and integrating native modules and third-party APIs in React Native.
  • Understanding of the process for deploying apps to the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, including the app review, standards for app content, and post-deployment monitoring.
  • Experience with front-end frameworks like Tailwind with the ability to weigh in on the advantages and disadvantages of said frameworks.
  • Experience with state management libraries (e.g., Redux, MobX) and their integration with React applications.
  • Familiarity with testing frameworks and libraries such as Jest, Enzyme, or React Testing Library, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing practices.
  • Proficiency in using build tools like Webpack, Rollup, or Parcel for bundling and optimizing web applications.
  • Working knowledge of AWS Cloud services, particularly those related to web hosting, storage, and scalability. Familiarity with other platforms like Azure and Google Cloud is a plus.
  • Strong skills in creating responsive and adaptive designs using HTML5 and CSS3, including pre-processors like SASS or LESS.
  • Advanced knowledge of leading development platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Salesforce, Pega, Docker, and Kubernetes).
  • Strong knowledge of software development lifecycles and agile methodologies.
  • Advanced knowledge of operating systems (e.g., Linux, UNIX, and macOS).
  • Proficient in software development lifecycle and agile practices.
  • Leading scripting and coding skills, along with a solid understanding of programming languages, to effectively develop and maintain software code.
  • Leading release and deployment skills to drive agile release processes and continually improve the deployment process. Familiarity with using feature flags in release is preferable.
  • Leading testing skills to identify errors and bugs, enhancing the robustness of processes. Experience with testing frameworks and libraries such as Jest, Enzyme, or React Testing Library, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing practices.
  • Proven ability to investigate and analyze information, and to draw conclusions.
  • Proven ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to diverse stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to design and deliver innovative products and services.
