Hatchs Environment, People, and Place practice provides integrated services in environmental engineering/management, community and stakeholder engagement, economics, and urban planning and design. We bring together extensive experience consulting on major infrastructure projects with a focus on strategic, advisory, economic, and planning consultancy.

We are seeking a Senior Urban Design / Urban Planning Consultant to lead and support transformative urban initiatives.

Location

Fulltime presence in our Brooklyn, New York office (with the exception of business travel).

Role

Lead and support transformative urban initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring over 8 years of professional experience in urban design, planning, and communitycentered development. This role requires a strategic thinker with a strong design sensibility, deep understanding of urban design, land use and zoning, and a passion for inclusive, equitable urban regeneration and city building.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead neighborhood visioning projects: develop and implement longterm strategies for neighborhood revitalization, integrating community aspirations, policy frameworks, and design excellence.
  • Urban design & land use studies: conduct site analysis, spatial planning, and design studies that inform zoning, land use policy, and development scenarios.
  • Project management: oversee multidisciplinary teams, manage timelines and budgets, and ensure highquality deliverables across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Community engagement & cocreation: design and facilitate inclusive engagement processes, workshops, and charrettes that empower residents and stakeholders to shape their environments.
  • Stakeholder collaboration: coordinate with public agencies, private developers, nonprofits, and community groups to align project goals and foster partnerships.
  • Policy & regulatory analysis: interpret and apply zoning codes, land use regulations, and urban policy to guide planning and design recommendations.

In addition to technical analyses, support leading business development initiatives, including proposal development, client presentations, thought leadership initiatives, and supporting Hatchs overall business development strategy.

What You Bring

  • 8+ years of experience in urban design, urban planning, or related fields.
  • Degree in architecture, urban design, urban planning, or related discipline.
  • Project execution experience: support delivery of client work and internal reporting/tracking project progress, ideally in consulting.
  • Proven track record in community engagement, visioning, and cocreation processes.
  • Strong proficiency in design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, GIS, SketchUp). Basic handsketching familiarity a plus.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and lead interdisciplinary teams.
  • Deep understanding of urban systems, equitydriven planning, and sustainable development.
  • Detail oriented and outcome focused with a willingness to collaborate within and beyond the internal team and a desire to work in a dynamic, deadlinedriven environment. An entrepreneurial and can do attitude, with an ability to work toward solutions despite real world constraints of limited data.
  • Mentorship of junior staff and contributing to a culture of excellence and innovation.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.

Schedule

Onsite 5 days a week.

Compensation

Base Compensation: $110,000 - $145,000 (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location).

Regional Director.
