Job Description

Summary

Cancer cells accumulate detrimental genetic mutations that perturb the function of important proteins they express. Our lab investigates how protein-folding chaperones, specialized proteins that help other proteins to fold and function within cells, influence the accumulation and biological effects of cancer mutations. The ultimate goal of this work is to identify new targeting strategies for precision cancer medicine. We are looking for a Research Associate I, who will make significant contributions towards achieving this goal. A strong training in molecular biology and/or biochemistry is required.

Function: Provides responsible technical assistance in support of research projects by completing assignments requiring a basic knowledge of fundamental techniques and practices related to a particular field of academics or research.

Scope: Impacts cancer research efforts throughout the institution.

Key Functions

• Assists principal investigator with scientific research projects focused on understanding the impact of protein-folding chaperones on the accumulation of genetic variation and how they relate to cancer evolution and response to therapy.

• Execute experiments and critically analyze the results under the supervision of the PI or other lab members. These experiments include, but are not limited to, genetic engineering of yeast and cancer cell lines, assessment of cellular drug tolerance in cell culture, chemical genetics, functional genomics, genome engineering, cloning plasmid DNA libraries for high-throughput robot assisted assays, RT-PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, protein purification, proteomics, metabolomics, and other approaches.

• General laboratory operations including the assembly and use of laboratory equipment and implements safety procedures. Assists with basic laboratory techniques and in preparation of media solutions, buffers and reagents.

• Reads literature and confers with superiors regarding new procedures and modifies them according to the needs of the project.

• Present data at lab meetings to contribute to scientific discussions.

• Maintains detailed and complete electronic lab notebook.

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree, major course work in one of the basic sciences.

Experience

Required: No experience.

Preferred: Flow cytometry, Mammalian cell culture, Molecular techniques
