Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements: - United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
- The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
- Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME); (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
- Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who meet other appointment requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not training licenses) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged. They have a limited scope of practice under supervision.
- Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Additional Requirement: Completed ACGME accredited residency in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
- Preferred: Incumbent is a full-time employee, appointed on a career basis, with tenure expected to span several years.

- Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform duties under normal and emergent conditions, including moderate lifting, reaching, use of fingers, walking, bending, and other physical and mental demands as outlined in VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Duties
- Primary Care Physicians perform a wide variety of tasks, requiring creativity and latitude.
- The provider will work within the Primary Care Service at Salisbury VA Healthcare System (VAHCS).
- Must be familiar with Family Practice concepts, tools, and technology.
- Must hold a Medical Degree (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) from an approved institution and have completed an ACGME accredited residency in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
- Meet physical standards and credentialing criteria outlined in VHA policies.
- Responsibilities include ensuring adequate resources for administration, clinical practice, education, and research.
- Administrative duties include attending staff meetings, communicating with team and administrative staff, and assisting with issue briefs and investigations.
- Clinical management involves maintaining open encounters and consults, documentation, and monitoring clinic management.
- Maintain involvement in clinic productivity, quality, patient safety, and process improvements.
- Must remain privileged and practicing in their specialty field, with privileges approved by the Professional Standards Board.
- Provide compassionate, appropriate, and effective patient care.
- Demonstrate knowledge of biomedical, clinical, and social sciences; use scientific evidence to improve care.
- Use interpersonal and communication skills to maintain professional relationships.
- Exhibit professionalism, continuous development, ethical practice, and cultural sensitivity.
- Understand healthcare systems to improve health outcomes.
- Participate in teaching, monitor educational activities, and supervise trainees.
- If involved in research, demonstrate ability to identify problems, plan, execute, and publish findings.
- Report to the ACOS of Primary Care or Medical Director, ensuring effective delivery of primary care and compliance with standards.
